There are also a lot of people who flip gear, so hiding the serial may be a way to avoid being found out by the person who sold you the item from knowing you flipped it. I myself practice it, but provide the serial if asked or list the item with the first 3 numbers so people can tell when it was made if they check. So when you sell a lens, a buyer might drive the price down knowing it's been going around several owners (3rd, 4th hand and so on).
#LEICA CAMERA SERIAL NUMBER SEARCH SERIAL NUMBERS#
Here in Asia (Hong Kong, Singapore) there's a culture of hiding serial numbers because some of this gear changes hands pretty regularly. Nikon for example asks for purchase date, store you bought it from etc.

Normally they also want to know where you bought it from. The prospective buyer can check to see if it is in any stolen databases.Įvery mfg has a website where you can register a product. Providing the serial # creates transparency. Not posting the serial # 'could' suggest that the seller has no problems passing "issues" onto the next buyer. If the seller knowingly/unknowingly bought a stolen item, then that would be the same as if he bought any stolen item. If the seller didn't steal the camera then he has nothing to worry about. I don't buy any of that - no pun intended. it is not a good time to buy leica used without proof. In the last year, many cameras and lenses were stolen from Leica stores. Occasionally Leica gets in the product into a repair that has a serial number that is flagged as stolen, Leica will confiscate the camera and give it to the police. You don't want somebody else to register your camera or lens.
#LEICA CAMERA SERIAL NUMBER SEARCH FULL#
The full serial would allow you to register the lens on Leica website and your insurance. You can show the first part and then you can see what year it was made. Just curious what the thought process is on this. Is there a reason people feel the need to hide the serial numbers on their cameras? I understand this practice for identifying strings like License plates but I fail to see a reason to hide the serial number on your Leica camera.
